Barry Ford

Barry started life in the music business as a drummer in a gospel group, ‘The Soul Seekers’ with vocalist Tony Kingston, better known for the classic Red Red Wine.

With the success of Red Red Wine Tony asked Barry to join his band.

They did various gigs around the country including the first Reggae festival at Wembley Arena alongside such greats as Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, Bob &Marcia (Bob Andy-Marcia Griffiths) and many others.

Soon after he decided to form his own band. So along with guitarist Gordon Hunte, bass player Trevor Williams and keyboard player Tony Cole they called themselves “The Power”, playing the usual soul covers and backing various artists of the time.

They soon got bored of doing the same thing as everyone else so they decided to change their musical approach and began writing their own material, as well as a name change from The Power to Noir, Britain’s first all Black Rock Band.

This led to a rapid rise on the music circuit not without a little help from Moira Bellios and Ian Samuels, they went on to support The Rolling Stones, Cream and a good few other bands including being asked by the daddy of British Blues Alexis Korhner to be his backing band for a while.

Noir got signed to Dawn Records But in the middle of recording their first album got caught up in a dispute with the label which caused the band to split, but although the record was never completed the label decided to go ahead and release it anyway under the title of “We Had To Let You Have It”

After Noir he decided to concentrate on being a session drummer working with BB King, Robert Palmer, Ram John Holder, (Pork Pie) Vivian Stanshal, Doctor John etc;

Round about this time he was invited by Charlie Gillett to join Kilburn And The High Roads with Ian Drury.

Barry says one his favourite songs which he recorded with them was “Clever Trevor”

At the same time as playing with The Kilburns Barry was approached by the band Clancy who also needed a drummer, and so along with Dave Skinner (Keyboards) Dave Vasco (guitar) Ernie Graham (guitar) Collin Bass (bass) And master percussionist Gasper Lawall they recorded two albums for Warner Bros Records under the guidance of Martin Jennings.

The first album “Seriously Speaking” was produced by Steve Smith who also produced (Bob Marley Live At The Lyceum).

And the second “Every Day” produced by the band as well as two singles “Steal Away& You Have Made My Life So Sweet”.

After the demise of Clancy, Barry along with Michael Dan (keyboards) Winston Bennett (guitar) took a little time in the studio and recorded The definitive reggae album “Exiles Ina Babylon” on the Sun Star Label.

The success of the record saw the formation of the band “Merger” For which Barry changed places from drummer to front man on vocals.

It wasn’t long before egos got in the way of the music, so Barry decided to take his leave of the band and off he went to Jamaica where he teamed up with Dennis Brown to produce a single for Pam Nestor called Hiding & Seeking.

It was at this point he met the one and only Freddy McGregor & The One Love Band.

With Freddy on drums and the rest of the band they recorded the album “ Cool Breeze Blowing” in Harry J’s studio in Kingston.

Most of the tracks from this album are featured on the Soundtrack of the Paramount Picture “Ladies &Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains” Directed by Lou Adler, and Starring Ray Winstone, Diane Laine, Laura Derne, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Paul Simenon and Barry Ford as”Lawnboy”.

Try and catch it, it’s a cult classic.
