The Van Demon The Van Demon

The Van Demon Have you heard the one about the film star, the Robbie Williams impersonator and the World Music producer? Well, don't worry, you soon will. There are three free spirits in the unholy trinity that makes up The Van Demon a group of such mysterious force they moved DJ Claire Sturgess to declare live on X-FM: "I like that. Ooh, I really do like that." Now you can find out for yourselves what got Claire so excited. The Van Demon are: Ben Hardy (songwriter, vocalist, guitarist). Recently returned to the UK from Hollywood where he filmed the lead role and composed the music for King Bones, a high-concept rock and roll tragedy from Imax director Barry Derbyshire, due in cinemas in 2002. Former member of highly touted London band Harry Monk. Much admired by Chris Evans, the group notoriously broke up before a scheduled appearance on TFI Friday. Drugs and alcohol were said to have played a part. Ben studied to be a mime artist. He is tall. Dave Carter (songwriter, vocalist, guitarist). Music degree from Leeds University. Erstwhile collaborator with garage supremo Mark Hill of Artful Dodger. Sang with a band called Pornstar, of whom the less said the better. Paid for his studies by impersonating Robbie Williams in Northern Take That tribute group Bonsai but (in a spooky echo of real life Robbie's fate) the group dumped him in Butlin's in Phwelli in Wales on New Year's Eve, 1998, after he punched Gary Barlow on stage. Colin Smith (songwriter, producer, engineer). Colin abandoned a career as engineer for pop stalwarts Go West and Imagination to head for the dark continent, where he became in-house producer for World Music label Gallo Africa. Worked with Peter Gabriel, Lucky Dube, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, The Art of Noise, Norman Cook and Harry Belafonte. Once shook the hand of Nelson Mandela. Returned to the UK to form duo In Colour with singer Juju. They scored two top thirty hits on BMG in 1997 / 98. Became head of production at MAP Music, where he has collaborated with Jah Wobble and hip hop legend Lee Stone. All in all, everything was going quite well for Colin until he became possessed by The Van Demon. Hooked up to an intravenous supply of cheap red wine, Hardy, Carter and Smith buried themselves alive in the MAP Music studios for a year, all the while working on a state-of-the-art, hi-tech, prog-rockin', indie-pop monstrosity that answers to the name The Van Demon. Onstage, the group turn into a seven headed hydra, with a line-up that includes one of the country's most exciting guitarists, Kavus Torabi (also of Monsoon Bassoon) and block rocking drummer Ian Cotterall (of Blusher). They were named X-FM's unsigned band of the week on October 21st. Daily Telegraph and BBC Breakfast music pundit Neil McCormick has made them one of his picks for 2002. I could go on, but it wouldn't make any sense. The Van Demon sound like nothing but themselves. The Van Demon. Hearing is believing.
